The Tool Question I Get More Than Any Other

Scenario 1: You're Assembling and Installing Cabinets All Day

If most of your week is screwing boxes together, fastening hinges, and setting drawer slides, the impact driver is the better first tool. Full stop.

The impact driver's rotational hammer action does two things a regular drill can't. It transfers most of the torque down the axis of the screw, so you're not fighting wrist twist. And it stops the screwhead from camming out, which means far fewer stripped screws.

Worth clarifying: an impact driver and a hammer drill are not the same thing. A hammer drill hammers back-and-forth for masonry. An impact driver hammers rotationally for fasteners. If you're driving cabinet screws all day, you want the impact driver. If you're drilling into tile or concrete, you want a drill with a hammer function.

One choice that surprises people: for most cabinet work, a quality 12V brushless impact driver is actually a better pick than a 20V beast. It's lighter, more maneuverable under sink bases and inside kitchen islands, and less likely to over-drive a screw into thin material. That "less torque is good" position sounds weird, but for finishing work it genuinely is. The 20V drivers shine when you're sinking long structural screws into framing lumber or driving lags.

There's one catch: the bits. Cheap bits will strip a screw just as fast as a bad driver. I tell installers to buy a magnetic sleeve bit holder and proper Phillips or square-drive bits — about $20 total, and it saves more time than upgrading to a flagship driver.

If your work is more making than assembling — cabinet doors, custom panels, furniture pieces — then a variable-speed drill with a good clutch is the right first tool.

An impact driver has speed control, but it's nowhere near as fine as a drill's clutch. The clutch lets you set a torque ceiling. When the screw is seated exactly at the surface — not a quarter-turn deeper, not proud of the material — the clutch slips and the tool stops driving. That's the control you need when you're working with veneer, MDF, or a hardwood edge where an over-driven screw leaves a dimple right where it'll be visible.

A drill also does what an impact can't: clean, straight holes for hinge cup boring, shelf pin columns, or pilot holes that land exactly on your mark. You can't get that flat-bottomed Forstner bit finish with a impact driver.

I remember a shop that lost a walnut countertop because a rushed crew used an impact driver to pre-drill for cabinet pulls. The bit grabbed, snapped at the shank, and the spiral scored the surface on the way out. That countertop represented about $4,000 in material and labor. A proper variable-speed drill with a depth stop would have been $150. I should have asked what they were drilling before recommending anything — these days I always do.

Counterintuitive as it sounds, a drill is also the better choice for mixing compounds, running wire cup brushes, and any job where variable speed — not maximum torque — is what you need.

But if you're on the road — installing kitchens for production builders, working punch lists at multifamily sites, or servicing commercial doors — an all-weather tool chest is worth the money over a standard box. Look for sealed gaskets around the lid, coated or stainless drawer slides, and a lock you can rekey. Prices for a solid 40–50 inch rolling all-weather chest run roughly $400–$900 based on major retailer listings in January 2025; verify current rates. The higher tier usually buys you thicker steel and a better drawer system, not just a fancier badge.

  1. What eats your time? If you lose minutes driving screws, you need the impact driver. If you lose minutes fixing holes, chips, or over-driven screws, you need the drill.
  2. Where does your work actually happen? If the answer is a truck or trailer, buy the all-weather tool chest before you upgrade to a more expensive driver. If it's a fixed workshop, spend that money on the tool.
  3. What's the worst possible failure? If a mistake ruins a $4,000 panel or costs you an hour of rework, precision beats speed. If a mistake makes you ten minutes late, speed beats precision.

There's no universal answer to the drill-versus-impact-driver question, and anyone who gives you one confident answer hasn't seen how differently cabinet shops and install crews actually work. But your answer becomes obvious once you look at your week honestly. And whichever way you land, take the same approach to the rest of your setup: check what a proper catalogue offers before settling for whatever happens to be in stock nearby, and buy quality where it counts.
